FAQs
- What is Neighbourhood Watch?
-
Neighbourhood Watch is about people getting together with their neighbours to take
action to reduce crime. They're community initiatives owned and run by their Members
- they're supported by the police but not owned by them. Neighbourhood Watch schemes can:
- cut crime and the opportunities for crime
- help and reassure those who live in the area
- encourage neighbourliness and closer communities
- How do I join/ set-up a Stockport Neighbourhood Watch scheme?
- To get involved and become a Member of an existing Stockport Neighbourhood Watch scheme - find your local scheme. The National Neighbourhood Watch website, offers a postcode search option to discover any Neighbourhood Watch schemes in your local area: click here to search.
- What's the role of a Coordinator?
- A Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator is a volunteer who oversees their local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Their role involves building a community and gaining interest from local people who might want to become Members. You can read more about scheme Coordinator roles here.
- How many homes are included?
- There are no hard and fast rules over the number of homes involved - the average tends to be around 10-20 houses. It's up to the scheme Coordinator how many homes are involved in each scheme. The area's geography might also decide for you!
- How do we revive an existing scheme?
- Some Neighbourhood Watch schemes do become inactive. If a Neighbourhood Watch group is ready to close or has been inactive for many months, it might benefit from working with other community groups in the area. Contact your local scheme Coordinator to ask them to check what happened to the previous Coordinator [find your scheme here] – they may have moved on or had to stop running the scheme for personal reasons. We can then discuss the next steps to revive the existing scheme.
